Sita Ramanan

Monk/focused practitionerr

Description:

Physical characteristics: Indian (the curry kind), 5’9” tall, muscular, and just a bit beefy. Very long, very dark hair that is usually bound up with pins or chopsticks. Darkish skin with a light scar on chin (this is a mark of Hanuman, and part of the reason that her parents were able to justify sending her to the temple). Age 35, been in the US for 15 years. Features aren’t especially notable, and she can usually blend into a crowd (in NYC, at least). She has a hanuman langur monkey (largely for fetching snacks), that started following her around during her service at the temple and now won’t go away. His name is Hannie

Bio:

Background: Sita Ramanan is originally from a large peasant family living in a small village outside of Varanasi, India (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varanasi). She was a very badly behaved child, always getting into trouble, so when she turned five, her parents decided to devote her life to contemplation and worship of Hanuman—and by that I mean that they left her outside the temple doors, rang the bell, and ran away. The Hanuman monks at Sankat Mochan Temple (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sankat_Mochan_Hanuman_Temple) in Varanasi took her in and trained her in their monkish ways of religion and combat. Sita, however, is a true child of Hanuman (more on him below), and does not devote herself to her studies, preferring to play tricks on her fellow monks and run around like a monkey. The older monks always giving her a hard time for being too mercurial and not calm enough, to earthy and not airy enough because of her limited magic abilities and earth specialization. She is always being punished for lacking balance. Still, she is able to master the monk’s fighting style and some earth magic, and she has a very strong devotion to Hanuman.

Note on the Monks of the Order of Hanuman: The main mission of the monks is to maintain the current balance of the world, and keep the status quo between rich and poor, “good” and “evil”, black and white, etc. They will seek to maintain this stasis until they get word from Hanuman, in his Shiva the Destroyer aspect, that it is time to tip the balance and bring a destructive purge to the world. Yea, they’re a little nuts. Because of this mission, they may not consistently fall on the side of good or evil, and have been known to throw in with the “bad guys” if doing so will maintain a balance.

Rising Conflict: Despairing of how to make a model monk out of her, the temple elders decided Sita needed a stronger teacher. When she turned 20, they sent her to the US to apprentice under Nam, whom they hoped could beat some sense into her. Nam is a Hanuman monk and an agent of the order in the states. He is well versed in air and earth magic and a wicked fighter. He is very wise and known for his ability to maintain a balance within himself and to see the greater balance that must be maintained in the world—and the actions that the order should take to maintain it. His main task in the US is to influence the White Council–Red Court war so that the balance of power is maintained and neither side gains too much power, and the last thing he needs is an apprentice—particularly a disappointing one like Sita

The Story: Nam and Sita are actively engaged in behind-the-scenes operations to shift the balance of the Red Court–White Council war. On this particular night, they are engaged in stealthy spying on a Red Court stronghold, using their monky powers and magic to blend in and creep close to the vamps to hear their plans. Unfortunately for them, AKA blunders into their hiding place and gives them away to the vamps. A chase ensues, and eventually Sita and Nam are cornered by one of the Red Court beasties. Nam gets knocked to the ground and trapped under a dumpster, leaving Sita to fight the vamp solo. Fortunately for her, Kitsune walks past at just the right moment, distracting the vampire and giving Sita an opening to smash the vampire to death, saving her master and earning his grudging respect (for the moment).
